2) Choose left side bar, right side bar or none.
You can choose to have 2 side bars.
3) Choose the location of your navigation links.

This website has a landing page with just one link button that leads to the home page. Most websites don't need a landing page. A landing page can have definite marketing disadvantages if you do not have an established brand name.
